Required Materials
Instrument: students should have a quality instrument in a well-lit area free from distractions on which to practice.
Method Books: students will be responsible to obtain the required method books as instructed by the teacher. You can expect the set of new method books to cost about $30 at each level. Purchasing books used in good condition (without markings) is encouraged and will likely save you money.
At higher levels students may be expected to purchase books for repertoire in addition to the method books.
In most cases other materials will be provided at no extra charge.
Virtual lesson technology: to be able to enjoy successful virtual lessons students must have access to good quality camera, microphone, speakers, and screen (for online lessons only).
Lesson Cancellation and Make-up Lessons
Lessons canceled up to 24 hours prior to regular lesson time are eligible for a make-up lesson. Lessons canceled after 24 hours prior to the regular lesson time will not receive a make-up lesson, though extreme circumstances may be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
Each student is allowed one make-up lesson per calendar month. Make-ups must occur within the week the lesson was missed, and must be scheduled during a free slot in the schedule.
Lessons canceled by the teacher will be rescheduled which will not count against the allotted make-up lesson. If circumstances do not allow this kind of cancelation to be made up, the lesson will be refunded.
No lesson canceled by the student/parent is eligible for refund.
Practice Expectations
Learning to make music and learning to practice music are one and the same. Therefore, students will be expected to maintain a regular practice schedule of at least 30 minutes a day, 6 days a week. More advanced students may be expected to practice for longer times each day.
Some students may be assigned practice videos in which they record a video of their assigned pieces and send them to the teacher on one or more days during the week between lessons.
Parents of younger students should help and encourage them in their practice schedule.
Performance Expectations
Recitals will be held quarterly. These performances are required.
Students may also perform at their local festivals. These performances are not required but are highly encouraged.
You will be notified of recital and festival dates at least 2 months before they occur.
Tardiness
If the student is not present 15 minutes after the start time of the lesson, the lesson will be canceled and no make-up lesson will be offered.
Holidays and Breaks
A two-week break will occur in the summer and at end of December. The teacher reserves the right to other breaks as necessary.
You will be notified of exact dates approximately 2 months prior to any break.
Breaks will not be charged tuition.
No lessons will be taught on the following national holidays:
Jan 1 New Year's Day
Jan 17 Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Feb 21 Presidents' Day
May 30 Memorial Day
Jul 4 Independence Day
Sep 5 Labor Day
Nov 11 Veterans Day
Nov 24 Thanksgiving Day
Dec 25 Christmas Day
If your lesson falls on a national holiday your lesson can be rescheduled which will not count against the allotted make-up lesson.
If there are other holidays that you would like off, please follow the normal procedure for cancelation and make-ups.
Termination of Lessons
When lessons are terminated, the last lesson will occur the last week of the calendar month. At least 2 weeks’ notice of termination before that date is expected.
Policy Updates
You will be notified of policy updates via email should they occur.
Virtual Lesson Procedures
Young students often need extra support from parents to succeed in virtual music lessons. Students under 12 years of age will be expected to have an adult present for online lessons to help with technology equipment i.e. troubleshooting, moving the camera so hands can be seen on the piano, etc.
Parents helping with technology are asked to not interfere with playing or teaching during lessons.
